What is a disaster?
It is a sudden calamitous occurrence that causes great harm, injury, destruction, and devastation to life and property.
What are the risk factors underlying disasters?
Environmental factors, social and economic factors, and political and institutional factors.
What are the environmental factors?
Factors that concern location, climate, environmental degradation, etc..
What are the social and economic factors?
Poverty, education and awareness, access to resources, etc..
What are the political and institutional factors?
Governance, conflict
What are the effects of disasters on one’s life?
They have physical and emotional effects, social and community effects, economic effects, and long term effects.
What are the physical and emotional effects?
This can refer to infrastructure and life. These include injury, property destruction, death, trauma, and psychological effects
What are the social and community effects?
Displacement from homes, breakdown of social fabrics/systems
What are the economic effects?
Job loss, property/infrastructure loss
What are the long term effects?
Environmental degradation, health consequences
