trunk assessment Flashcards
observation
posture and functional movements
* rolling
* dynamic sitting balance
* sit-stand
muscle tests
test muscle activity, control and selective movment
* flexors
* side flexors
* rotators
* A/P lateral pelvic tilt,
* bridging
* single leg fall out
passive movements
(if high tone expected) - posterior tilt and slump, lateral tilt and elongation, rotation
trunk impairment scale Verheden et al 2004
- Assesses static and dynamic sitting balance and trunk coordination in a sitting position
Static subscale:
- (1) ability to maintain a sitting position with feet supported
- (2) while the leg are passively crossed
- (3) when the subject crosses the legs actively
Dynamic subscale - lateral flexion of the trunk; unilateral lifting of the pelvis
Coordination subscale - rotate upper (shoulder girdle) and the lower (pelvis) part of the trunk 6 times
treatment
preperation for movement: stretching/lengthening muscles for better segment alignment and activation
fascilitaition of movement to activate muscles- trunk extensors/ side flexors/ rotators, with arm placing/ reaching, stable and unstable surface
functional strengthening of muscles- flexors (abdominals RF and TA), extensors, rotators/ side flexors
neuroplastic changes happen when
- intensive and repetitve movement
- optimising normal movement
- treat as early as possible
