Trimester 2 Unit 4 Flashcards
Chemical Reaction
The process by which atoms of one or more substances are rearranged to form different substances
Reactants
Compounds on the left side of arrow, what we start with
Products
Compound on right side of arrow, what is produced
Why balance chemical equations
law of conservation of mass
Rules for balancing equations
Substricts only apply to the element they are after
Coefficients apply to all elements in the chemical they are attached to
Chemical Reaction Examples
burning, rotting, rusting
Signs of a chemical reaction
color change, gas formation, energy change, temperature change, precipitate is formed
Arrow
means a reaction is taking place
Plus sign
separates the different chemicals
Exothermic
takes less energy to break the bonds of the reactants than is released when the bonds are formed
Endothermic
takes more energy to break the bonds than when the products are formed
What are the five types of chemical reactions
Synthesis, Decomposition, Single Replacement, Double Replacement, Combustion
Synthesis
A compound is made from simpler materials. A+B=AB
Decomposition
A compound is broken down into simpler compounds. AB=A+B
Combustion
A compound containing carbon and hydrogen (sometimes oxygen) combines with oxygen gas to produce carbon dioxide and water. CxHy(Oz)+O2=CO2+H2O
