what is the role is tribunals
A
deals with specific areas of law generally concerning social and welfare legislation such as employment rights, heard by tribunal judge and two lay people, two types of tribunals: in house and administrative- UNDER TRIBUNAL COURT AND ENFORCEMENT ACT 2007, two tiers to it which is first and upper tier

Structure of tribunals
A
First tier tribunals- hear cases at first instance
Upper- Reviews and decides appeals asking from first tier tribunal

Who hears the tribunals
A
Heard by a panel of three consisting of a tribunal judge and to lay persons who have expertise in the area in dispute

advantages of tribunals
A
- much cheaper and in many cases quicker than going to court
- Legal aid is available usually for human rights issues such as immigration or mental health issues
- from July 2017 you do not need to pay fees to make an employment tribunal claim

disadvantages of tribunals
A
- public funding is not available in most cases so the individual has to bear the cost
- there may be a delay in hearing the case especially if it involving employment law
- The powers of tribunals are very limited as they can only give out fines and penalties
