Triangles/Regions of the Neck Flashcards
What is A? What are its main contents and underlying structures?
Sternocleidomastoid Region
Sternocleidomastoid muscle; superior part of external jugular vein; greater auricular nerve; transverse cervical nerve
+ contents of supraclavicular fossa
What is 1? What are its main contents and underlying structures?
Lesser supraclavicular fossa
Inferior part of internal jugular vein
What is B? What are its main contents and underlying structures?
Posterior cervical region
Descending part of trapezius muscle; cutaneous branches of posterior rami of cervical spinal nerves
Describe the position of the suboccipital region to the posterior cervical region.
Suboccipital region lies deep to the superior part of the posterior cervical region.
What is C? What are its main contents and underlying structures?
Lateral cervical region/posterior triangle of neck
Part of external jugular vein, posterior branches of cervical plexus of nerves, spinal accessory nerve, trunks of brachial plexus, cervicodorsal trunk, cervical lymph nodes
+ subclavian triangle
What is 2? What are its main contents and underlying structures?
Same as posterior triangle
What is 3? What are its main contents and underlying structures?
Omoclavicular (subclavian) triangle
Third part of subclavian artery, part of subclavian vein (sometimes); suprascapular artery; supraclavicular lymph nodes
What is D? What are its main contents and underlying structures?
Anterior cervical region of neck/anterior triangle of neck
Submandibular gland almost fills triangle; submandibular lymph nodes; hypoglossal nerve; mylohyoid nerve; parts of facial artery and vein
+ Submandibular triangle
+ Submental and carotid triangles
What is 4? What are its main contents and underlying structures?
Submandibular (digastric) triangle
Submental lymph nodes and small veings that unite to form anterior jugular vein
What is 5 and 6? What are their main contents and underlying structures?
5 = Submental triangle
6 = carotid triangle
Common carotid artery + its branches; internal jugular vein + its branches; vagus nerve; external carotid artery + some of its branches; hypoglossal nerve and superior root of ansa cervicalis; spinal accessory nerve; thyroid gland; larynx; pharynx; deep cervical lymph nodes; branches of cervical plexus
What is 7? What are its main contents and underlying structures?
Muscular (omotracheal) triangle
Sternothyroid and sternohyoid muscles; thyroid and parathyroid glands
