What is trenchfoot?

A

A condition caused by the feet remaining wet and cold for to long. The tissue would become numb, and discolour, and then start to break down.

What is a duckboard?

A

A plank of wood laid across the floor of the trenches for the soldiers to stand on. The trenches were constantly water logged, and the duckboards prevented soldiers from contracting trench foot.

What is no-man’s land?

A

The area between trenches that is owned by neither side.

What is mustard gas?

A

A colourless, odourless gas used in trench warfare. Soldiers were issued with gas masks to protect themselves, but sometimes they used urine-soaked cloth to keep the gas away from their mouths and noses.

What is shell-shock?

A

A disturbed state of mind produced in some people when they are exposed to too many she’ll explosions and gunfire and too much trauma.
