What happened when the Australian soldiers landed in Gallipoli?
A
Strong currents, poor planning and bad maps meant that they were down two kilometres north of the planned landing sight. They faced Gallipoli’s steep cliff faces, an area that has now become known as ANZAC cove. By the end of the day more than 2000 ANZACs were dead, and more were wounded.
It was almost impossible for the Australian soldiers to advance or retreat, as the Turkish soldiers were above them in the cliffs.
