focuses on the person as a whole and not the collection of their behaviour

exposing the client to the stimulus or situation that makes them anxious (classical conditioning)
prolonged exposure
always exposed to the stimulus , the avoidance response eventually becomes exhausted

recognise maladaptive thought patterns and replace them with more realistic thoughts
