Psychotherapy (talk therapy)
Use of psychological methods to help a person identify and change troubling emotions, thoughts, behaviors
Eclectic psychotherapy
Drawing on techniques from different forms of therapy (depends on client and problem)
Psychoanalysis
Approach to the psychological treatment of disorders originally developed by Sigmund Freud
Psychodynamic theory
theories of human functioning that are based on the interplay of drives and other forces within the person based on psychoanalytic theory
Free association
patient is encouraged to verbalize without censorship or selection whatever thoughts come to mind
Resistance
during free association, the client may censor certain thoughts and topics
Transference
reacting to the therapist in a way which brings out unresolved feelings about another person
Interpretation
therapist suggests meanings related to the dreams, resistance, and transference, to help the client bring conflicts out into the open and work through them
Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT)
Form of psychotherapy that focuses on helping clients improve current relationships

Specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders
Psychiatrists [MD]
Physicians who specialize in diagnosis + treatment of psychological disorders; medication primary mode of treatment
Humanistic Therapies
Attempt to reduce growth-impeding inner conflicts by providing clients with new insights
Learned helplessness
Repeated exposure to stressors results in individuals failing to use any control options that may become available
Cognitive Therapy
Identifies and changes irrational, unproductive thinking, reducing negative emotions
Systematic Desensitization (Exposure Therapy)
Reduces anxiety responses through counterconditioning
