Traumatic pathologies of the carpus Flashcards
Which breed and what type of carpal fracture do we see more commonly?
Racing greyhound,
Radial carpal bone fractures - dorsal slab and chip fractures
XR of radial carpal bone fractures in greyhound?
carpal OA, radial carpal bone sclerosis (often chronic changes)
Dorsal slab fracture, oblique fissures?
Boxers
Aetiology of carpal fractures?
uknown, hypothesized due to incomplete ossification
Fatigue/Stress fractures
Treatment of os carpi radiale fractures?
Conservative - best
Lag screw, fragment removal - unpredictable
Not responding:
Pancarpal arthrodesis
Fracture of the accessory carpal bone is seen most in what breed?
Racing greyhound
Symptoms of fractured accessory carpal bone?
Acute lameness, carpal swelling, pain on carpal flexion
Fractures of ulnar carpal or numbered carpal bones - treatment?
uncommon fractures
hyperextention trauma
tx: pancarpal arthrodesis
Metacarpal fractures?
Fracture of base - hyperextention injury
Subluxation of the antebraciocarpal joint?
more common than complete luxation
Fractured ulnar styloid process or rupture of collateral ligaments
Sx to treat - prosthetic ligament etc
Post-op splint in flexion
Radial carpal bone luxation - breeds? cause?
Collie
Poodles
Kerry blue
Trauma
Treatment of radial carpal bone luxation?
Reduction of the bone, secure with screw or K-wire
Repair or medial collateral ligament
Good prognosis if treated promptly
If not -> Arthrodesis
Which joint levels are most commonly affected in ligamentous damage of the carpus?
Middle carpal and carpometacarpal joints
Intercarpal hyperextention?
Acute - trauma
Chronic - degenerative form - Border collie
Treatment of intercarpal hyperextention?
Pancarpal arthrodesis (better than partial)
