Elbow luxation Flashcards
Types of luxations?
Congenital
Acquired
Which direciton is usually traumatic elbow luxations?
Lateral;
The medial epicondylar ridge is considerably larger
In what position can elbow luxations occur?
only when the elbow is flexed and the anconeal process is not engaged with the humerus
Diagnosis?
Palpation
XR to confirm, as well as look for associated fractures and ligament avulsions
Treatment?
Closed reduction if not contraindicated - as soon as possible
Spica splint 2 w
Rest + rehab 4-6 w
Indication for open reduction?
If closed reduction is not possible
Instability following closed reduction
Reluxation following closed reduction
Concurrent fractures (inta or periarticular)
Prognosis of acute elbow luxation?
Good to excellent as long as reduction is achieved quickly, and post reduction instability is addressed
What is the occurence of congenital elbow luxations?
Very uncommon
Types of luxations in congenital elbow luxations?
Isolated humeroulnar luxation
isolated humeroradial luxation
Combined hueroulnar and humeroradial luxation
Typical humeroulnar luxation?
Lateral rotation and dislocation with lateral displacement of the olecranon and triceps
Rarely medial luxation
Typical humeroulnar luxation?
Lateral rotation and dislocation with lateral displacement of the olecranon and triceps
Rarely medial luxation
Typical breeds for humeroulnar congenital luxations?
Shelties
Poodles
Terriers
Small breeds
Age of presentation for humeroulnar congenital luxations?
a few weeks old
Treatment of humeroulnar congenital luxations?
Manual reduction
Young: Maintain with transarticular pin or transcondylar humeral pin and pin across ulna
old: Conservative, or ulna osteotomy, arthrodesis, amputation
Type of luxation in humeroradial congenital luxation?
Caudolateral or lateral luxation of the radial head
