Humerus: OC(D) Flashcards
Potential mechanisms of OC(D)?
Abnormal maturation of cartilage
Compromized vascular supply to the region
Trauma
Nutrition
Genetic factors
Localisation of OCD of the humerus?
Abnormally thickened cartilage at the most medial and distal region of the humeral condyle, partial or complete separation from subchondral bone
Breed, age?
Labrador retriever
Golden retriever
Rottweiler
Bernese Mountain dog
4 months and older - most dogs presented later
Presentation?
Unilateral or bilateral forelimb lameness and excercise intolerance
inactivity stiffness
large joint effusion
Pathophysiology?
Capillary bed compression - transchondral fractures
Incongruity
In conjunction with FCP in 12% of cases
Diagnostic findings?
Muscle atrophy
Joint pain
Effusion
Decreased ROM
Imaging modalitites?
CT
XR
(arthroscopy, arthrotomy)
Treatment?
Conservative: NSAID, rest, BCS
Surgical: removal of loose cartilage, debridement, osteostixis
Prognosis?
Variable - management should be considered lifelong
