What are the main signs of PTSD?
Persistence of:
Re-experiencing trauma
avoidance of stimuli associated with trauma
Symptoms of increased arousal
What are the negative cognitions associated with PTSD?
Persistent and distorted sense of blame
Estrangement
Decreased interest in activities
inability to recall certain aspects of the evetns
How long must symptoms last to be diagnosed as PTSD?
longer than 1 month
must cause significant distress and impair function
What are the treatment options for PTSD?
SSRIs
Cognitive therapy-groups, or EMDR
Increased risk of substance abuse-so avoid Benzos
What is Acute Stress Disorder?
Symptoms similar to PTSD but the duration is 3 days to 1 month after trauma exposure
What are adjustment disorders?
- Developement of emotional/behavioral symptoms in response to an identifiable stressor; occurring within 3 months of stressor
- Results in distress out of proportion and impaired functioning
- Does not usually last longer than 6 months

Somatic Symptom Disorder (pain disorder)

Illness Anxiety Disorder

Somatoform Disorder, NOS
What is Somatic Symptom Disorder?
One or more somatic sx that are distressing and result in significant disruption of life
Cause excessive thoughts/feelings/behaviours related to somatic symptoms (high levels of anxiety)
One somatic symptom may not be continuously present, but the state of being symptomatic is persistent
Specify if it presents with pain
What are good treatments for Somatoform Disorder?
Therapy
Pain management, neurology, psychiatry
CBT
Hypnosis
Anti-Anxiety meds (Clonazepam for Conversion Disorders)
What is Conversion Disorder?
One or more sx or deficits affecting voluntary motor or sensory function that suggests a neurological or other general medical condition
Sx often brought on or worsened by stressors/conflicts
Not intentionally produced
Causes significant distress or impairment
Can include pain, sexual dysfunction or anything else
What are the main symptoms complained of in Conversion Disorder?
Parasthesias/Anasthesias
Weakness
Paralysis
Pseudoseizures/Psychogenic seizures
Involuntary Movements
Sensory Disturbances (blindness/mutism)
What is Illness Anxiety Disorder?
Preoccupation with having or acquiring a serious illness
Somatic sx are not present or if they are, are only mild
High level of anxiety about heatlh
Can be Care-Seeking or Care-Avoidant
What is Factitious Disorder?
Pt’s may present with:
Voluntary control of sx
Self-infected feces or saliva
Bizzare or unusualy sx
What is Factitious Disorder, NOS?
Munchausen’s
Munchausen’s by Proxy
