What is post traumatic stress disorder? (PTSD)
- Disturbing pattern of behaviours demonstrated by one who has witnessed or been confronted with a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, combat or an assault
- Exposed to an event that posed actual or threatened death or serious injury and responded with intense fear, helplessness or terror
- Disorder associated with a history of an event exposure
What are the four subcategories of symptoms for PTSD?
- Reexperiencing the trauma through dreams or recurrent and intrusive thoughts,
- Avoidance/Emotional numbness: avoids stimuli associated with the trauma, feelings of detachment, numbing responses, unable to gain control over life, avoidance behaviours
- Negative cognition, thoughts

Hyperarousal: persistently reexperiences the trauma through memories, dreams, flashbacks, or reactions to external cues about the event
Signs of increased arousal: insomnia, irritability angry outbursts
What is acute stress disorder?
- Occurs after a traumatic event
- Reexperiencing, avoidance, and hyperarousal that occur from 3 days to 4 weeks following trauma
- Can be a precursor to PTSD
What is reactive attachment disorder(RAD)?
disturbed inappropriate social relatedness minimal social and emotional responses to others, may be sad, irritable or afraid for no apparent reason
What id disinhibited social engagement disorder(DSED)?
unselective socializations allowing social interaction with both caregivers and strangers.Lack hesitation in interacting with strangers.
How are RAD and DSED connected?
occur before age 5 response to child abuse or neglect
What is the treatment for PTSD?
- Counselling
- Outpatient therapy
- medication
What is the medication used for PTSD?
- SSRI/ SSNRI (serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors/antidepressants - combination therapies work best
What is dissociative disorders?
- Subconscious defence mechanism that helps a person protect their emotional self from recognizing the full effects of some horrific or traumatic event by allowing the mind to forget or remove itself from the painful situation or memory
- Timing and Occurrence
What is the treatment and interventions of dissociative disorders?
- Group or individual therapy (community setting)
- Medications (anxiety/depression or both)
- Short term hospitalization for survivors of Trauma and Abuse
