What is the most important skills a nurse can develop with their client?
Therapeutic communication
What are the components of therapeutic relationships?
Trust, genuine interest, Empathy, acceptance of person, unconditional positive regard, self-awareness
What are some behaviours that build trust?
Caring, interest, understanding, consistency, honesty, keep promises, listening to client
What is congruence and why is it important?
Occurs when words and actions meet. It is important that nurses have congruent behaviours to build trust with the client
What is empathy and what are the three techniques used to send empathetic messages?
Perceive the meanings and feelings of the client and to communicate understanding to the client

What is positive regard?
appreciate the client as unique while giving them respect
What are the phases of the nurse client relationship? (peplau’s model)
- Orientation
- Working
- Termination/Resolution
What is orientation in the Peplau’s model?
Establish roles, purpose, and expectations, nurse begins to build trust
What is working in the Peplau’s model?
Problem identifications, exploitation- nurse guides client to examine feelings and responses and develop better coping skills and a more positive self-image; this encourages behaviour change and develops independence
What is termination/resolution in the Peplau’s model?
Problems are solved and ends when relationship is ended

It is a non-verbal prompt
S: sitting facing the ct squarely, at an angle
O: open posture, arms, and legs uncrossed
L: leaning(at times) towards to person
E: maintaining EYE contact, without staring
R: Relaxed posture
