What is obsessive compulsive personality(OCD)?
Certain disorders characterized by repetitive thoughts and or behaviours, such as OCD can be grouped together and described in terms of an obsessive-compulsive spectrum
What are obsessions?
- recurrent, persistent, intrusive, and unwanted thoughts, images, or impulses that cause marked anxiety and interfere with interpersonal, social, or occupational functioning.
- Person attempts to ignore or suppress thoughts
What are compulsions?
- Are ritualistic or repetitive behaviours or mental acts that a person carries out continuously in an attempt to neutralize anxiety
- The person knows the rituals are unreasonable but feels forced to continue them in an attempt to relieve anxiety caused by obsessions

What is the treatment for OCD?
- Behaviour therapy and medication
What are the medications used for OCD?
- SSRI antidepressants, fluvoxamine(Luvox) and sertraline (Zoloft) are first line followed by venlafaxine (Effexor)
- Second generation anti-psychotics for treatment resistant OCD in adults
What is the difference between obsessions and compulsion?
Obsessions: recurring and irrational ideas or images, lead to compulsions, can cause fear, worry, and deep anxiety
Compulsions: recurring, irrational acts of behaviours, results of obsessions, can even cause bodily damage
What are the interventions for OCD?
- Using therapeutic communication
- Teaching relaxation and behavioural techniques
- Completing a daily routine
- Providing client and family education
