transport vessels Flashcards
how thick are arteries?
thick
what are arteries?
they carry blood under high pressure to body
what is a heart beat?
pulse w/in artery
what is the size of capillaries?
one cell wall thick
where do capillaries carry blood to?
cells
what are capillaries?
site of exchange
how thick are veins?
they are thin
what do veins do?
they carry blood under low pressure
where do veins carry blood to?
the heart
what do veins contain?
one way flaps
what is icf?
intracellular fluid and lymph
what occurs due to icf?
fluid is forced out of capillaries and bathes the cells.
where is all material exchange dissolved in?
the icf
where do excess icf get collected in?
the lymphatic system (vessels)
what happens when icf is collected?
it becomes lymph
what happens to all the lymph made from excess icf?
it is drained back into the large veins near the heart.
what do the major lymphatic systems have?
they have lymph nodes
what do phagocytes do in the lymph nodes of the major lymphatic systems?
they filter bacteria and dead cells from the lymph
how much chambers does the heart have?
4 chambers
how are the chambers of the heart split?
there are two upper atria and two lower ventricles.
what do the atria do?
they receive blood returning to the heart from the rest of the body
what do ventricles do?
they pump blood out of the heart into the arteries.
what does the right ventricle do?
they receive deoxygenated blood from the body and pumps it thru the pulmonary artery to the lungs.
what does the left ventricle do?
they receive oxygenated blood from the lungs thru the pulmonary vein and pump it into the body.
