transport Flashcards
what is blood?
plasma w/ suspended red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets (the smallest)
what is plasma?
it contains everything
what is rbc?
most numerous, they lose nucleus (no longer produces proteins) when mature, contains pigment called hemoglobin (iron/Fe), and is produced in bone marrow
what is wbc?
larger than rbc, has one or more nuclei (produce antibodies), and is also produced in the bone marrow + lymph nodes
what are the types of wbc?
phagocytes and lymphocytes
what are phagocytes?
soldiers that engulf bacteria and leave capillaries via ameboid motion
what are lymphocytes?
they produce antibodies that inactivate antigens.
what produces the immune response?
antigen-antibody reaction
what are platelets?
cell fragments that consist of cytoplasm surrounded by a cell membrane and has no nucleus
what is blood clotting?
break in blood vessel
what does a break in blood vessel cause?
it causes platelets to rupture and releases an enzyme that converts fibrinogen into fibrin which forms a mesh work “web” of fibers across the wound.
what does the mesh work “web” do?
it traps blood cells forming a clot that stops bleeding.
what is immunity?
immune system + antibody action that results in two ways
what are the two ways that antibody action results in?
active immunity and passive immunity
what is one type of active immunity?
being sick = antigen —> lymphocytes make antibody
