nervous sys. Flashcards
what are the 3 types of neurons?
sensory, motor, and interneuron
what is the wiring of the sensory neurons?
sense organ/receptor to brain & spinal cord
what is the wiring of the motor neurons?
brain & spinal cord to effectors (muscle & glands)
what is the location of the interneurons?
brain & spinal cord
what are the interneurons wiring?
transmit nerve impulses from sensory neurons to motor neurons
what is the cns?
brain & spinal cord (central nervous sys.)
what is the pns?
all neurons both sensory & motor outside the cns (peripheral nervous sys.)
what is the brain?
the cns
what are the 3 major parts of the brain?
cerebrum, cerebellum, and medulla
what is the largest part of the brain?
the cerebrum
what does the cerebrum initiate?
all voluntary/conscious movements
where is the cerebellum?
below & behind the cerebrum
what does the cerebellum coordinate?
it coordinates all motor activity & maintains the body’s balance
where is the medulla?
base of the brain & connects to spinal cord
what does the medulla initiate?
involuntary activities
what are examples of involuntary activities?
breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, peristalsis
what is the medulla continuous with?
the spinal cord
what is the spinal cord protected by?
the vertebrae
what is the spinal coordination?
between the brain & other body structures
sense receptors
transmitted by sensory neurons to spinal cord “throughout body”
interneurons (transmissions)
transmits impulses to the brain “w/in spinal cord”
where does the brain carry impulses do?
to the motor neurons thru the spinal cord
where does spinal cord transmit to?
to appropriate effectors (muscle or gland)
where do the pns carry impulses between?
between the cns & the rest of the body
