Transport systems - Unit 2 Flashcards
What is blood made up of?
Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells
What is the circulatory system made up of ?
heart, blood, blood vessels
Phagocytes carry out what process?
Phagocytosis
How do phagocytes destroy pathogens?
destroys pathogens by digesting them with enzymes. Not specific
What do lymphocytes do?
Produces pathogens
What are the 4 chambers of the heart called
Right and Left Atrium, right and left ventricle
How come the left ventricle is thicker than the right ventricle?
The left is thicker as it has to pump blood all around the body while the right ventricle just has to pump blood to the lungs
What is the function of the artery?
Carriers blood away from the heart
What is the function of the vein?
Carries blood back to the heart
What is the function of the capillary?
Connects arteries to veins
Why does blood need to carry oxygen and nutrients?
Oxygen and nutrients from food must be absorbed into the blood stream for aerobic respiration. Waste materials such as carbon dioxide must be removed from cells into the blood stream
What features must surfaces involved in the absorption of materials have?
large surfaces, thin walls, extensive blood supply
Where do alveoli stay and what do they look like?
Lungs, grapes
where do villi stay?
Small intestine
What does the blood capillary digest and what are they digested from ?
glucose, amino acids - starch, proteins
