Cell production-Unit 2 Flashcards
Unit 2
What is the importance of cell division?
Growth and repair of damaged cells, maintain the diploid chromosome compliment
Where does mitosis take place
nucleus
How many chromosomes does a human cell have?
2 sets of 23 (46)
What must each new cell contain?
Same number of chromosomes as the parent cell
stages of mitosis!
1- Chromosomes are replicating and doubling in number in prep for mitosis individual chromosomes are not visible
2 - Chromosomes become coiled up and visible. Now made up of identical chromatids
3 - Pairs of chromatids link up at the equator of the cell, spindle fibers form and attach to the chromatids
4- Pairs of chromatids are pulled apart, chromosomes move to opposite poles of the cell
5 - Nuclear membranes start to form
6 - cytoplasm divides
where can the two types of stem cell be found?
Tissue - body throughout life
Embryonic - obtained from embryo at early stage
What is the hierarchy of organs?
cells - tissues - organs - organ systems
