Food production - Unit 3 Flashcards
What chemical does fertilisers provide plants and what do plants do with it
Nitrates, they build amino acids into proteins
Algal blooms.
-Fertilisers leach into freshwater due to rainfall
-Increase the growth of algae in the water
-algae blocks most of the sunlight from reaching the water plants at the bottom of the body of water
-Plants die as they cannot produce their own food from photosynthesis
-They become food for bacteria
-Bacteria divides and take up most of the oxygen in the water
-decrease in biodiversity as the water animals have no oxygen and they die
What are two alternatives to pesticides ?
-Biological control
-Genetically modified crops
What are pesticides used for ?
Killing plants or animals which are affecting crop yield.
Pesticides sprayed on crops can accumulate in the bodies of living organisms over time, reaching lethal levels. What is this called?
Bioaccumulation
What is biological control ?
Using living things to control pests
