Transport Systems in Animals Flashcards
What makes blood and what are they?
Plasma - Straw coloured liquid in which chemicals are dissolved and cells float
Red Blood Cells - Carry oxygen
White Blood Cells - Help fight infections
Platelets - Help blood clot
What is the function of the heart?
To pump blood around the body, it is known as the cardiac muscle.
What are all the parts of the heart?
Pulmonary vein
Vena cava
Right ventricle
Right atrium
Pulmonary artery
Aorta
Left ventricle
Left atrium
What is the job of the heart valves?
The heart valves are structires whch let the blood flow in one direction only.
What are the different blood vessels and their functions?
Blood leaving the heart is carried in Arteries. Blood carried through the organs and tissues by tiny vessels called Capillaries. Blood is then returned to the heart in Veins.
What are the Coronary arteries and Coronary veins?
They deliver materials to the heart. And the Coronary veins ensure blood is returned to the general circulation.
Structure of Blood Vessels?
Artery - Thick muscular wall, to withstand high pressures.
Vein - Thin walls, because of low pressures. These have valves.
Capillary - Walls only one cell thick. Large surface area.
