Plant Cells and Tissues Flashcards
What is the the Epidermal Cells?
Irregular shaped cells that form a protective layer on the surface of the leaf.
What are the guard cells?
Sausage shaped thick walled cells, facing the central stoma, these control the exchange of gases.
What is the Palisade Mesophyll?
Columnar shaped cells, they contain many chloroplasts. Primary area for photosynthesis.
What is the Spongy Mesophyll?
Round shaped cells, the arrangement of these cells allows gases to diffuse easily. This is the secondary place for photosynthesis.
What is Phloem?
Sieve tube?
Companion cell?
Phloem tissue is made up of two cells.
Sieve tube cells connected via sieve plates providing a continuous stream of cytoplasm for transport of carbohydrates
The companion cells have a large nucleus and control the function of the sieve tubes.
What is Xylem?
Lignin rings?
Xylem cells lost their end walls and cytoplasm. They form hollow tubes which are supported by lignin rings, lignin is a woody tissue which aid in supporting.
Xylem is responsible for transporting water and minerals.
