Transport Systems Flashcards

1
Q

What are transport systems in living things

A

The transport systems in humans and plants are made of different parts that have specific functions. They work together to transport substances around a human or plant

Q

What is the function of red blood cells

A
  1. They transport oxygen to different parts of the body
  2. Millions of them make up each drop and make the blood red

Q

What is the function of Plasma

A
  1. It transports water and dissolved substances (digested food, mineral salts and waster products) to different parts of the body
  2. Makes up more than half of the volume of blood

Q

What is the function of the veins

A
  1. Carries blood poor in oxygen and rich in Co2 and waste materials towards the heart.
  2. The blood returned is pumped the lungs to receive a fresh supply of oxygen)

Q

What is the function of the capillary

A
  1. It acts as the exchange site of substances (digestive food, water, gas etc)
  2. They are the smallest most numerous blood vessels
  3. It transport blood from the arteries to the cells and carries away blood from the veins to function effectively

Q

Why do multicellular organisms need a transport system

A

A transport allows substances to be transported quickly in the organisms. Without one, cells would die of starvation and poison themselves from their own waste products

15
Q

Why do unicellular organism not need transport systems

A

DF, oxygen and waste materials can be carried to cells where needed or removed from the organisms in a short time.

Q

What is diffusion

A

Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.

17
Q

How does diffusion occur in a human

A
  1. DF and oxygen is of a higher concentration in the blood compared to the surrounding tissues
  2. They leave the capillaries through diffusion and enter the tissues
  3. Co2 also leaves the tissue through diffusion, they diffuse into the capillaires and are carried away
18
Q

How does diffusion occur in leaves

A
  1. Through the stomata, oxygen diffuses through the leave where it has a higher concentration to the air of lower concentration
  2. Co2 diffuses from the air where it is of higher concentration to within the leaf of lower concentration
19
Q

how does diffusion occur in the roots

A
  1. Dissolved mineral salts in the water diffuses into the rootcell of lower concentration
  2. The mineral salts diffuse from the roots to the xylem of lower concentration
  3. The mineral salts are then transported to the other parts of the plant
20
Q

What is osmosis

A

A process by which water molecules pass through a semi-permeable membran
