SEGGS Flashcards
What is the definition of hereditary
The passing of genetic information from one generation to the next during sexual reproduction
What is the process of inheriting genes
It is random and the genetic material from the sperm and the egg cells fuse into a unique combination
What is fertilisation
The fusion of the nuclei of the sperm cell and the egg cell is known as fertilisation
What occurs during menstruation
- The unfertilised egg is discharged
- The lining of the uterus and blood vessels break down and are discharged
How long is the average menstrual cycle
28 days (Can vary from person to person. It can also be affected by stress, illness and diet)
What is the menstrual cycle
- Days 1 - 5 menstruation (can vary from lady to lady)
- 6 - 9 The uterine lining grows with many blood vessels formed in it. Preparation for the implantation of the embryo
- 10 - 15 Fertile period. The ovary will release an egg into the oviduct around day 14. Having sexual intercourse will likely result in pregnancy.
- 16 - 28 The uterine lining will continue to thicken. If no fertilisation occurs menstruation will occur after day 28.
How does drug Abuse affect babies
- They may be born pre-mature. They will need intensive care as organs may not be fully developed
- They may have low birth weight. Thus they may have underdeveloped immune systems and have a higher risk of getting infections.
How does Smoking affect the foetus
The child may develop heart, lung and brain diseases as well as obesity.
How does Alchohol affect the foetus
Can lead to physical, intellectual and behavioural changes. Also may find difficulty in learning and focusing
What is the ryhthm method
Couples do not engage in sexual interxourse during the time the woman is ovulating or her fertile period. (UNRELIABLE can still get pregnant)
What is a condom
A rubber covering, that is placed over the penis before sexual intercourse, to prevent sperm entering the uterus.
What is Spermicide
A cream that kills sperm in the vagina
What is the intra-uterine device
Piece of plastic or metal (usually copper). Inserted into the uterus by a doctor and prevents any sperm from fertilising an egg. Lasts 10 years
What are Birth control Pills
Contain female sex hormones that prevent the releasing an egg from ovaries
What is the Diaphragm
A dome shaped plastic that covers the opening of the cervix to prevent sperm entering the uterus
What is tubal ligitation
Oviducts are surgically cut and tied. Thus eggs that are released cannot be fertilised
What is Vasectomy
The sperm ducts are surgically cut and tied. Thus, the sperm cannot be released
What is an Abortion
A doctor deliberately removes the embryo or foetus from the uterus. Usually within 12 weeks of pregnancy. Illegal to do so after 6 months
What are the risks of an abortion
- Damage to uterus results in bleeding.
- Possibility of Infertility.
- Suffer from infection.
4.Causes depression or guilt
How to prevent abortions
Refrain from premarital Sex. Practice abstinence (virginity).
What are the three main STIs
Human Immunodeficieny virus, syphilis, gnorrheoa
Causes of STIs
- Blood transfusion
- Sharing of unsterilised or contaminated needles used by an infected person
- From mother to child during birth or Breast-feeding
Causes of Gnorrhoea
