Transport in Plants Flashcards
Why do plants need transport system?
- Needs substances like water, minerals and suagr to live - Need to get rid of waste substances
- Have a small surface area to volume ratio
- Have a relativly high metabolic rate
- Exchanging substances by diffusion is too slow to meet metabolic needs, so need transport systems to move substances fast too and from individual cells
Two types of tissue involved in transport?
Xylem and phloem tissue
Role of xylem tissue
-Transport water and mineral ions in solution from the roots to the leaves
Role of phloem tissue
-Transport sugar (in a solution) up and down the plant
What system do xylem and phloem make up?
Vascular system
What other function does xylem have?
-Support of plants structure
In a plant cross-section, is xylem or phloem shown to be on the outside?
Phloem
Where are xylem and phloem in the root?
-The centre providing support for the root as it pushes through the soil
Where are xylem and phloem in the stem?
-Near the outside, providing a ‘scaffolding’ that reduces bending
Where are xylem and phloem in the leaves?
-Making up a network of veins which support the thin leaves
Adaptations of xylem vessles?
- The cells making up the wall are dead, so water can travel up it like a vessel without being used
- T
What are plant cells thicken with?
-A woody substance called lignin
What does lignin do?
-Heps support the walls and stop them collapsing inwards
