Transport in Animals Flashcards
Why does blood only flow 1 way?
You donโt want oxygenated and deoxygenated blood to mix
What is a double circulatory system?
When the blood enters the heart twice on one journey/circuit of the body
Which side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs?
Right, deoxygenated blood
Which side of the heart pumps blood to the rest of the body?
Left, oxygenated blood
Which side of the heart is more muscular?
Left
Do arteries take blood to or from the heart?
Away from
Do veins take blood to or from the heart?
To
Name the order that blood is pumped through the heart, starting with the aorta
Aorta, rest of body, vena cava, right atrium, triscupid atrioventricular valves, right ventricle, pulmonary semilunar valve, pulmonary artery to lungs (DEoxy), from lungs (oxy), pulmonary veins, Left atrium, biscupid atrioventricular valves, left ventricle, aortic semilunar valves, aorta
What is the importance of the septum?
Separate left (oxy) and right (DEoxy) sides
What are the importance of the valves?
Controls how much blood can enter and exit the heart and separate oxygenated and deoxygenated blood
What is coronary heart disease?
When plaque builds up in the coronary arteries and restricts blood flow
How can you avoid getting coronary heart disease?
Give up smoking, be active, have a healthy diet
What is pulse rate?
The number of times your heart beats in a minute
What is the effect of physical exercise on the heart rate?
Your heart pumps more blood around the body and the more you exercise the more blood and oxygen your muscles need as they are working so the rate increases
How many vessels come out of the aorta?
