Transpiration and Translocation Flashcards
What are the 4 things that affect the rate of transpiration
-increasing temperature
-increasing air movement
-low humidity
-increased light intensity
How does the increase in temperature affect the rate of transpiration
-as the temperature of the environment increases, the kinetic energy of the water vapour molecules increases
-this causes water vapour molecules to diffuse faster
-meaning transpiration happens at a faster rate
explain how increase in air movement (wind speed) affects the rate of transpiration
-wind blows water vapour molecules away from the underside of the leaf
-this maintains the concentration gradient between the air spaces in the leaf
-water vapour molecules diffuse down the concentration gradient faster
-meaning transpiration occurs at a faster rate
explain how low humidity affects the rate of transpiration
-low humidity means less water vapour molecules in the air outside the leaf
-this maintains the concentration gradient
-this causes water vapour molecules to diffuse down the concentration gradient faster
-faster rate
explain how increase in sunlight affects the rate of transpiration
-as light increases the plant opens more stomata (and wider) so they can absorb more carbon dioxide from atmosphere for photosynthesis
-this increases the diffusion of water vapour molecules
What is the process of active transport
how mineral ions move from soil into the root
What is the process of diffusion
how water moves from cells into the air spaces
What is the process of osmosis
how water moves from soil into the root
whats the process of evaporation
how gases move between the leaf and the atmosphere
What is translocation
the movement of food through phloem tissue
What is transported sugar used for
respiration
converted to starch for storage
