Plant transport and plant tissues Flashcards
Why do plants have a transport system
This is because transport in plants is essential as they’re too large for materials to diffuse in and out
What organisms can rely on diffusion
very small organisms to rely on diffusion because
-they have a large surface area to volume ratio
-short diffusion distance
-lower demand for nutrients
How do plants produce glucose
by the process of photosynthesis in the leaves and the stem
Why is glucose needed and what’s it needed for
all living cells within the plant for respiration
Other than glucose, what do plants need
a supply of amino acids and minerals which are transported throughout the plant
Name the differences between Xylem and Phloem
-xylem cells are dead and phloem are living
-xylem cells are waterproof
-phloem process is translocation and xylem is transpiration
lignin
strengthens
and waterproof
sink
where sucrose is removed from phloem e.g root
describe the structure and function of the stomata
-tiny pores found on the underside of the leaf and each stoma is formed between two guard cells
Name the substances that can diffuse through the stomata
-oxygen (diffuses out of the leaf)
-carbon dioxide (diffuses into the leaf)
-water vapour (diffuses out the leaf)
What are the stomata open and closed by
guard cells
What is the name given to guard cells that absorb water by osmosis
turgid
what is the name for guard cells loosing water by osmosis
flaccid
causes stomata to narrow and close
Definition of transpiration
the loss of water vapour out through the stomata
