What do viruses and bacteria have in common
They are both very small
Name a difference between bacteria and viruses
bacteria are very small cells
viruses are not cells but still tiny
Explain where viruses live and what they do
they live inside your cells
-and replicate themselves using the cells machinery to produce many copies of themselves
-the cell will naturally burst, releasing new viruses
Cell damage definition
what makes us feel ill
What are all protists called
eukaryotes and most of them are single-celled
As well as protisys what else are they
-parasites
-they live on or inside other organisms and can cause them damage
-often transferred to the organism by a vector
Name a characteristic about fungi
-they are single-celled and some have a body made up of hyphae (a thread like structure)
What is the function of a hyphae
they can grow and penetrate human skin and the surface of plants causing diseases
what else can hyphae produce
spores, that can be spread to plants and animals
Name 3 viral diseases
-measles
-HIV
-tobacco mosaic virus (TMV)
Explain the disease Measles
it is a viral disease
-spread by droplets from an infected persons sneeze of cough
-develop a red skin rash and show signs of a fever
-can be very serious or fatal
Name two things measles can lead to
pneumonia
inflammation of the brain
How to prevent measles
most people are vaccinated when young
Explain the disease HIV
-it is spread by sexual contact or exchanging bodily fluids such as blood
-causes flu-like symptoms
-the virus attacks immune cells
How can HIV be controlled
by antiretroiviral drugs
