Transmission Flashcards
What type oil system is it?
Wet sump oil system
Purpose of the transmission, RPM and ratio
To transfer torque from main driveshaft to mast and main rotor
6,317 Engine RPM to 413 MR RPM
15.29:1 Reducing Ratio
What does the transmission consist of
Consists of a top case, support and lower case which contains:
- input pinion: from Kaflex main drive line
- bevel gear: reducing RPM
- shaft arrangement sun gear
- accessory gear drive
- oil pump
- oil filter housing
- rotor RPM monopole pickup
- magnetic chip detectors
Describe the mounting
2 pylon assemblies bolted to the aircraft roof
- 1 degree left for translating tendency
- 5 degreed forward for level cabin in forward flight
4 elastomeric corner mounts connect transmission to pylons
- primary vibration isolating components, for a vibration free ride through speed ranges
2 elastomeric transmission restraint spring assemblies
- base and rear of each pylon
- maintain proper alignment of engine to transmission main drive line
- stop deck fittings on forward end of each restraint which limit transmission movement

Describe the chip detectors
3 magnetic chip detectors
- 1 upper left side transmission
- 1 lower left side transmission
- 1 left side of freewheeling unit
Self locking bayonet probe with permanent magnet on end, when sufficient metal is attracted to complete circuit between pole and ground
XMSN CHIP CAS - Land as soon as possible
Purpose of the transmission oil system
Provide lubrication to transmission, mast and freewheeling unit
Components of the transmission oil system
- pump, driven by accessory gear
- 2 chip detectors in case, 1 in freewheeling unit
- oil filter manifold with bypass
- oil cooler
- oil manifold
- level site glass on right side
- non-vented filler cap on right upper side
Capacity of the transmission case
5 quarts
Transmission oil output
6-6.7 gallons/minute
Approximate transmission oil system pressure
52 PSI
Pressure at which the transmission oil filter LRB extends
14 +/- 2 PSID
Pressure at which the transmission oil filter bypasses
17 PSID
