Length of stage is - 5 min

Active 3rd stage is mother is given oxytoxin and syntocinon to help deliver placenta

Explore the physiological changes that occur in the postpartum period

A

Immediately postpartum = size of grapefruit, ↓ 5
-Walls close & vessels compressed

6-12 hrs. postpartum- @ umbilicus or 0
Usual decent = 1 cm / day, e.g., ↓1, ↓2

Variations:
If boggy & high = ↑ bleeding & clots
If firm & off to one side = ? full bladder

Wt. ↓ from 1000 gms to 50 gms
Size ↓-cells ↓in size (reverse hyperplasia)

Lochia Types

A

Rubra- bright red ~ for 2-3 days
Serosa- pinkish- from ~ 3rd to 10th day
Alba- creamy/yellowish from 10th to 24th days
Total volume- ~ 240-270 mls.
Abnormal findings - foul smelling, excessive, return to rubra from serosa/alba

Changes in the Perineum

A

State: intact, tear or episiotomy

Usually findings- Edematous, bruised
Assess for Redness, edema, echymosis, discharge & approximation (REEDA), pain every shift

Assess site & pain level every shift/more often
Assess knowledge (how to care for site)
Apply ice or cool teabags for first 24 hrs
Teach re peri bottle use (every 2-4hrs)
Teach re inspection & wiping clean to dirty
Teach re Kegal exercises & positioning
Teach re sitz bath 2-3 times per day after 24 hrs.if needed

Describe taking in and taking-hold

A

During the first day or two after birth, the woman tends to be passive and somewhat dependent (taking in)

By the second or third day, the mother is ready to resume control of her body, her mothering, and her life in general. (taking hold)

Describe Maternal Role Attainment

A

is the process by which a woman learns mothering behaviors and becomes comfortable with her identity as a mother.

The anticipatory stage
-occurs during preganancy. Mother looks to role models, especially her own mother.

The formal stage
-begins when the child is born. the women i still influenced by the guidance of others and tries to act as she believes other expect her to act

The informal stage
-beings when the mother beings to make her own choices about mothering. Develops her own style.

The personal stage
-the mother is comfortable with the notion of herself as ‘mother’
