Transition Elements Flashcards
What are transition elements?
D-block elements that form at least 1 ion with a partially filled d-orbital
3 main properties of transition metals
1) varying oxidation states
2) form coloured compounds
3) used as catalysts
Ligand
Molecules that can donate a pair of electrons to a central metal ion to form a dative covalent bond
Complex ion
An ion formed when 1 or more molecules w/ a -ve charge/lone pair bond to a central metal ion
Examples of square planar complexes
Platinum, palladium + gold
