Fuel Cells Flashcards

1
Q

How does the hydrogen oxygen fuel cell work and what are the advantages over a conventional battery

A
  • uses the reaction of fuel (H2) with O2 to produce a voltage
  • The reactants flow in and the products flow out while the electrolyte remains in the cell

Adv

  • Fuel cells can operate virtually continuously so long as hydrogen and oxygen continue to flow into the cell
  • fuel cells do not have to be recharged

Q

What are the two reactions of a hydrogen fuel cell and overall reaction (alkali electrolyte)

A

1/2 O2 + H2O + 2e -> 2-OH
H2 + 2-OH -> 2H2O + 2e
H2 + 1/2 O2 -> H2O
