Covalent Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What’s different about the attraction in covalent bonding to ionic
A
Attraction = localised, so only acting between shared pair of electrons + the nuclei of 2bonded atoms
2
Q
What is a molecule?
A
The smallest part of covalent compound that can exist whilst retaining the chemical properties of the compound
3
Q
What is a dative covalent bond?
A
A covalent bond in which the shared pair of electrons has been supplied by one of the bonding atoms only.
4
Q
What are lone pairs of electron?
A
Paired electrons which are not shared
5
Q
What is covalent bonding?
A
The strong electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons + the nuclei of the bonded atoms
(Also the overlapping of atomic orbitals)
