Transformers Flashcards
What are transformers used for?
To step up or step down alternative current (AC)
Why don’t transformers work for DC?
Does not work with DC because it is static so does not induce a current
How do AC transformers work?
- An alternative voltage is applied to the primary coil, which forces an AC to flow in the coil - This produce a continually changing magnetic field in the soft iron core - The field cuts through the secondary coil and induces an alternative voltage with it. This forces an alternative current to flow
How do you strength the magnetic field?
A laminated iron core strengths the magnetic field and also reduces heat lost
What does a Step Up Transformer do?
Used to Increase Voltage
What does a Step Down Transformer do?
Used to Decrease Voltage
How many turns are on the coil in Step Up Transformers?
There are less turns on the primary coil than the secondary coil.
How many turns are on the coil in Step Down Transformers?
There are more turns on the primary coil than the secondary coil.
What is the equation for Transformers?
