Transcription Flashcards
What is heterochromatin?
Coiled up DNA (solenoid) that contains genes which are not expressed
What is euchromatin?
DNA in a ‘beads on a string’ formation containing genes that are expressed.
What is needed for initiation of transcription?
Transcription initiation factors
RNA polymerase
In what direction does the mRNA chain elongate?
5’ to 3’
What is the DNA code that normally acts as the promotor region for transcription?
TATA
Name 2 protective processes mRNA goes through
Capping- at 5’ end
Polyadenylation- at 3’ end
What happens to pre-mRNA to become mature mRNA?
Splicing. Introns are removed.
What is capping?
A 5’ to 5’ linkage which provides protection to the mRNA chain
What is polyadenylation?
The finished RNA chain has a very long adenine chain added to the 3’ end to protect the mRNA.
What is an intron?
A non-coding section of DNA
Where does transcription occur?
Nucleus
