+cost effective, trainees are productive- learn whilst working
-quality depends on teacher (bad habits), disruption to production
Induction
Learning about job, meeting colleagues.
+avoids expensive mistakes, lower labour turnover, become independent
-worker teaching new worker- reduces productivity (can’t complete their existing job)
Off the job
Local college, training programme outside work
+gain more skills/qualifications-benefits business-competitive edge
+no bad habits, takes stress off existing workers
-increased costs- lowers profit margins, value for money?
-poached/leave for better paid job
Training needs analysis
Finding information about employee skills. Makes decisions based on workforce planning-e.g more leavers=more induction training needed. Looks at costs- who needs training the most.
Training evaluations
Expensive- is it value for money?
Depends on- response of workforce
Difficult to quantify success- figures e.g increased sales
