What is training?
This means to improve the skills or knowledge within an organisation
What are general benefits of training?
- Improves the quality of products/services
- Motivates staff (e.g. trips)
- Develops skills to cope with a changing orgnaisation (better quality)
- Reduce the number od accidents
- Staff more confidant
- Improves company image
- Encourages new employees into the organisation
(efficiency, flexibility, production, customer service, waste, accidents)
What are general costs of training?
- It can be costly
- It can lead to lost production time
- Staff may leave after being trained
- Late deliveries rustlts in lower market share
What is staff development?
Staff are sent to training cources to stay up-to-date, as part of their CPD (continuing professional development), with external changes e.g. understanding standards check
What are methods of training?
Training schemes (graduate and corporate), work based qualifications, apprenticeships and continuing professional development (CPD)
What are traing schemes?
Intense programmes of training to equip staff with skills
What are graduate training schemes?
A way used to jumpstart careers
What are benefits of graduate training?
- If graduates are studying for a qualification, it may be paid for my employer
- Fast tracked to responsible roles in the organisation
- Provides great platform to start you career
- Graduates have access to a mentor/buddy
- Receive intense traing, development and support
What are costs of graduate training?
- Graduates require higher salleries
- Not all graduates are guaranteed full-time-jobs
What are corporate traing schemes?
This is a system of professional development activities provided to educate employees e.g. TGA diploma
What are benefits of corporate training schemes?
- Organisations benefit from highly skilles staff
- Staff are motivates, which lowers staff turnover
What are costs of corporate training schemes?
- Work time can be lost throughout training
- The organisation will have to pay staf more after trainign is complete
What are work based qualifications?
Qualifications that reflect skills and knowledge required for a specific job and are formal business qualifications e.g. apprenticeships, proffessional qualifications (when employer pays for an exam to become a chartered accountant)
What are benefits of work based qualifications?
- Employees become a registered member of a professional institute
- Increased sallery once qualified
- Employees have better promotion opportunities as training is releveent to the business
- Taylored to suit the business
- Saves costs
What are costs of work based qualifications?
- May leave for a better job once qualified
- Time consuming due to being done on a part time basis
- Costly to pay for trainers
What are apprenticeships?
A system of training that gives the practitioners on-the-job traing and you receive qualification and wage.
What are benefits of apprenticeships?
- Increases sallery once qualified
- Better promotion opportunities as training relevent to the business
- Peoplr gain work experience
- Lots of government funding (reduced costs)
- Contribute to organisation while training
- Paid (motivation)

What is CPD?
Training that takes place through a career to ensure that employees stay up to date with the knowledge and skills required to do a job or advance in their career

- Staff skills are improved (high quality)
- Motivates staff
- Staff are kept up to date with training requirements
What are CPD costs?
- Staff may need to be taken away from the workplace (decreased productivity)
- Costly for organisation
