What are appraisals?
Thisis a part of staff development where a two way meeting is conducted and employee performance is discussed
What are general advantages of appraisals?
(usually explain)
- Positive feedback can be given which motivates
- Targets can be set to improve productivity
- Training needs can eb identified which motivates and increases quality
- Payrises/bonuses can we awarded which builds loyalty
- Promotions may be offered which builds loyalty
- Stroing employee relations can mean employees are more adaptive to change
What are general disadvantages of appraisals?
- Time consuming to carry out sonlower productivity
- If negative feedback given demotivates and protential resentment
- Unrealistic goals add pressure
- If many improvements stress increases
What are types of appraisals?

One to one, peer to peer and 360 degree appraisal
One to one appraisals:
This is a regular review of employee performance
benefits:
- targets set to improve performance
- training needs identified
costs:
- time consuming
- resent process
Peer to peer appraisals:
When a review interview is carried out by a colleague at the same level
benefits:
- more relaxed
- relationship with manager not harmed
costs:
- personal relationship may make it ineffective
- bias may cause unneccessary pay rise/bonus
360 degree appraisal:
A complete appraisal that allows you to be rated by different people
benefits:
- complete profile created
- areas of subjectivity e.g. character and leadership measured
costs:
- some employees will find it difficult to be criticised
- time constraints can limit quality of responces
