Define
The Kármán line
A line defining the end of the Earth’s atomsphere, and the beginning of space. It is said to be at 100Km
Define
Atomsphere
A collection of gases, above a celestial body’s surface, held by it’s gravity
Define
Crust
The outermost layer of a planet, often made of rock.
Define
Continental Crust
Crust, found over continental plates of a planet, which makes it’s land.It is thicker than oceanic, having an average thickness of 30Km, but weaker , as it is only carrying air.
Define
Oceanic crust
Crust found under the oceans of a planet, which forms the ocean beds.It is much thinner than continental , being only 10km on average, but is much stronger, as it carries the weight of the planet’s oceans.
Define
Plate tectonics
Moving parts, which float on the planet’s mantle, that makes up the crust
Define
Continental plates
Moving parts on the planet’s mantle, that makes up the continents
Define
Oceanic plates
Moving parts , that float on the planet’s mantle, that make up the ocean beds
Define
Plate boundaries
The boundaries between two or more plate tectonics.
Define
Divergent boundary
A plate boundary, with two plates moving away from eachother
Define
Convergent boundary
A plate boundary, with two plates moving towards eachother
Define
Conservative boundary
A plate boundary, with two plates moving beside eachother
Define
Mantle
The second, and thickest layer of planet, made of liquid rock(Magma) 1630km thick in total.
Define
Upper mantle
The upper layer of the mantle , which is responible for convection currents and earthquakes.410Km thick
Define
Lower mantle
The lower layer of the mantle, responible for volcanoes and hotspots.1220Km thick
Define
Convection current
Spinning cycles of warming and cooling magma, which are responsible for moving the plates
Define
Hotspots
Parts of the mantle that is hotter than others, responsible for volcanic chains.
Define
Lithiosphere
A term used to describe the upper, cooler layers of the planet
There is no defined term, but people usually consider the crust and upper manlte to be the lithiosphere
Define
Asentosphere
A term used to describe the lower, hotter layers of a planet
Usually, the lower mantle and core
Define
Core
The central part of a celestial body, responible for it’s gravitational and magnetic field
Define
Outer core
The outer layer of the core , made of liquid metals, and resposible for the magnetic field.2200Km thick
Define
Inner core
The inner layer of the core, made of solid metal, due to extreme pressure/heat.Responsible for gravitational field.1,220Km.
