Q

What is the procedure for switching traction current back on at or after the published switch off time?

A

The controller must talk to the Track Access Manager

Explain why traction current needs to be restored

Request special line clear/line safe message be passed to the PCRO

The controller will then need to talk to the PCRO and

Tell them traction current needs to be switched back on

Wait for a special line clear/line safe message from TAC

Once special line clear/line safe is received the PCRO will contact the controller who will reset the TT and authorise switch in of traction current.

Q

What are the different types of traction current switches, how are they operated?

A

Section switch - divides a traction current section

Isolating switch - isolates a bay road, siding or terminal platform

Changeover switch - changes over traction current feed in a section of track

Coupling switches - joins two traction current together.

Switches can be controlled either manually or motorised.

Q

You must not use a Short Circuit Device if?

A

The date tag has expired

There is any visible signs of damage

Where rail fixtures or fittings can prevent its correct usage

At terminal stations where traction control equipment is available

Where there are out of gauge conductor rails

In a platform pit area

Within half a card length of a set of points or crossover

17
Q

Why must you monitor and track Traction Earth Detection warnings immediately?

A

You must not allow two trains with opposite polarity Earth faults into the same section. Trains meeting with opposite polarity faults could lead to explosion and loss of life.

Trains with these faults should be withdrawn from service immediately and isolated as soon as possible

18
Q

When should a service Manager consider before de training trains in a power failure situation

A

You must only consider detraining if the restoration time exceeds 30 mins
