What are the 4 tasks within the TPM?

Te Oranga
What is mauriora?
Access to Te Ao Māori
I.e access to the maori world
Includes things such as the marae, language and ability to participate in the maori world
What is wairoa?
Waiora is the protection of the environment BOTH physical and social environment
Environment = clean waterways, minimal air pollution
Social = racism
What is toiora?
Healthy lifestyles
Good diets, not smoking, adequate physical activity, safe sex and limited alcohol intake
What is Te Oranga?
Participation within society
Need to make sure that people have a good education, income, housing in order to enable maori to achieve in society and be healthy
What are the two prerequisites of TPM?
Ngā Manukura (LEADERSHIP)
Te Mana Whakahaere (SELF-AUTONOMY)
What is Ngā Manukura?
Health professional and community leadership
Acknowledging supporting, existing leadership within a community
What is Te Mana Whakahaere?
Capacity for self governance
Community control and enabling political environment
Self-determination over own resources, the conditions
Removing the barriers to what people’s priorities are for health protection
Why does the western-model not fit the Maori population?
Does not consider the factors maori value within health care
Language, family, kai etc
What is the significance of the TPM in terms of it being applicable to maori?
It is made for maori by maori
Can be applicable to other western populations
Allows for self-governance
