TP1 Intro to Anatomy Flashcards
Describe the sagittal planes and the two types
Sagittal plane passes longitudinally through the head, body or limb, dividing the structure into left and right.
- Mid-sagittal/median plane: equal halves
- Para-sagittal: Unequal halves
Describe the transverse plane
Cuts across the head, body, or limb at a right angle to its long axis of an organ or a part
Describe the dorsal (frontal) plane
Runs at right angles to the median and transverse planes, dividing the head or body into dorsal and ventral portions
Describe the directional term medial
Toward or relatively near the median plane
Describe the directional term lateral
Away from the median plane
Describe the directional term proximal/distal
Towards or nearer/away from or farther away from the body
Describe the directional term cranial
Towards or relatively near the head
Describe the directional term rostral
Towards or relatively near the nose - applying to the head only
Describe the directional term caudal
Towards or relatively near the tail
Describe the directional term palmer and plantar
Palmer is back of front foot in animals and plantar is back of back foot in animals
Describe the directional term axial vs abaxial
Axial is inside edge of toes and abaxial is outside facing edge of toes.
