No agriculture, no industry, no trade, no economic investment, no technological development, no justice, no art, no science and no human advancement

Social order is not the natural condition of mankind- for social order to come about, 3 problems have to be addressed

Individuals do not perceive cooperation to be in their best interest
How can we account for the existence of social order and society in general
Do we cooperate out of necessity?
Hobbes argued that humans are inclined to cooperate and consent to the rule of others because they recognise that this sacrifice is preferable to a life that is ‘nasty, brutish and short’

is social order always desirable?
Conflict is necessary for change. May not always be what people want but is needed. Suffragette movement for example

looking at the micro (how individuals interact with each other) level as opposed to the macro level (bigger picture)
what does social ordering practises consist of?
rituals we do everyday without noticing allow us to predict how others will act.
