Give some negative impacts of tourism

Poor paying and low skilled jobs for local people
Exploitation of local people - one earned often goes to companies over seas
Noise pollution, air pollution, loss of tranquility, increase in litter + waste
Pressure on frequently visited landscapes (coral reefs)
Habitat loss
Why do the Maldives attract large numbers of visitors
Stable economy Beautiful seas and sand 30°C all year round Island hopping Stable polotics
Give some of the positive impacts of tourism in the Maldives
Tourism brings $600 million a year
90% of governments revenue
Literacy rates increased (54% in 1977 to 99% in 2015).
Increase in jobs(11% of population employed in tourism)
Massively improved transport links
Give some of the negative impacts of tourism in the Maldives
Most of the resorts are owned by foreign companies meaning that the locals might not receive a high percentage because it leaks over seas
Greater inequality in wealth as shown by those who own the resorts to those who work there (annual wage £800)
Tourists activities such as snorkelling, fishing and diving are slowly deteriorating ecosystems (blasting is destroying coral reefs)
Give 4 ways in which tourism can be managed to promote sustainability
ECO TOURISM
- Involves small groups to travel to natural and unspoilt environments
- Educational, supports long term conservation and has minimal impact on natural environment.
- Benefits local communities from income and respect for different cultures
SUSTAINABLE TOURISM
- Organised in a way that this level can be sustained in the future without creating irreversible environmental, social and economic damage to the receiving area
PROTECTED AREAS
- Prevents tourism + development from existing
QUOTAS
- Only having a certain number of people visiting per year
Give some ways in which the Maldives are promoting sustainability
Resorts to be built on uninhabited lands only
Resort buildings must be 5 meters back from vegetation line
No buildings are allowed to be taller than the tree tops
No more than 20% of an island can be built upon (includes water bungalows)
Desalination plants are required in each resort
resorts must have their own septic tanks
Resorts must have their own incinerators for rubbish
