Population Flashcards
Give some causes in the increase of population
Better living standards Education Desire for children, work, old age Better living standards Disease cures Improved technology
Why will the agricultural and industrial revelations increase the population
Crop rotation, higher crop yields + selective breeding. The richer the country, less diseases, sewers
Why will urbanisation increase the population
Better infrastructure, less diseases, more jobs, easier to support a family
Why will the increased role of women decrease the population
Less time to just raise children
How do you work out the population growth
Birth rate - death rate (+ or -) depending if its emigration or immigration
What does Natural Decrease mean
The difference from the number of live births and deaths per year, death rate will be more than the birth rate
What is a balanced population
a population that is sustainable and can be supported by its own natural resources which are not depleting. Ideal as the entire population has a good living standard.
What is overpopulation
Resources are not able to sustain the population at the current standards of living. Biggest concern of the future
What is under population
The resources could support a larger population without any reduction in the standard of living. Too few people to use the resources of a country efficiently. e.g Australia

What is emigration
Where people exit a country
What are some social and cultural reasons for high birth rates
Belive in big families
Son to carry family name
Girls have a family at a young age

against contraception
What are some economic reasons for high birth rates
Children are an asset in some countries
Children can look after adults when they are old or sick
What is demography
Means population
What is the model/graph called and what does it show
Demographic Transition Model
Explains birth and death rate patterns across the world and time

1) China
2) India
3) USA
4) Indonesia
5) Brazil
6) Pakistan
7) Nigeria
8) Bangladesh
9) Russia
10) Japan
How does urbanisation affect the population
Birth rate rises as more people have an access to medical care in cities rather than rural areas. This the infant mortality rate will fall which increases the birth rate.
Birth rates may fall in the long term as it is easier to have “family planning”.
Death rates fall as it is cheaper and easier to receive medical attention and education services. More reliable food supplies.
How does Agriculture affect the population
More food is being produced than ever before
Frees up workers on the farm which goes into industry, rising the birth rate
How does eduction affect the population
If people know about hygiene, death rates will fall.
People tend to have fewer children they can focus their resources on improving the lives of those few children.
How has emancipation of women affected the population
Delays child bearing age
Women are much more likely to go to university and work for a few years before having their first child which results in fewer women being born per women as fertility declines the older you get.
