Nikko — Visit the national park that consists of 200,000 acres of magnificent forested mountain land; here visit the Toshogu Shrine, established in 1617. It is a masterpiece of Japanese art and architecture. A visit to the park is not complete without viewing the dramatic 300-foot Kegon Waterfall.

Kyoto — Unlike Tokyo, this is an ancient city that requires a city tour because there are so many attractions. It is considered to be the cultural capital of Japan, which includes many shrines and temples. Not to be missed are the famous Kinkakuji and Ginkakuji temples, the gold and silver pavilions, respectively. Also, visit the Zen Garden, which offers a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the city.

Nara—The famous Deer Park is located in the middle of the city. Also not to be missed are the Todaiji Temple (world’s oldest and largest wooden structure) and Daibutsu Buddha (largest indoor Buddha in the world).

Great Wall — This is about a two-hour drive from Beijing and is probably one of the most photographed attractions in the world. Built over 2,600 years ago, it was originally over 4,000 miles long. Today it is a popular half-day trip where tourists can climb and walk parts of this great structure.

Xian — This city is about two hours from Beijing by air. Xian is probably the most historically important city in all of China. It was the capital for more than 1,100 years and was the beginning of the famous Silk Road to the west. Now it is most famous for the approximately 8,000 life-sized terra cotta soldiers from the ancient burial-site of the first Chinese Emperor Qin Shihuangdi. Buried to guard the emperor in the afterlife, these amazing warriors have different expressions and are thought to have been carved from live models.

Hong Kong — Returned to China in 1997, Hong Kong is a former British colony that is now the richest city in all of China. It is best known for its incredibly diverse shopping — everything from custom-tailored silk suits to unusual cricket cages! Not to be missed: Victoria Peak, superb views of the area; Aberdeen, the floating village of junks, sampans, and restaurants; and Kowloon for shopping.

Shanghai — The largest city in China and its major port, Shanghai contains the wonderful Museum of Art and History, plus many gardens, parks and temples.
