Totipotency And Cell Specialisation Flashcards
What are totipotent cells?
Those which can mature into any body cell
What affects whether a cell produces one protein or another?
Whether the genes are expressed (switched on)
How can gene expression be prevented?
By preventing transcription and breaking down mRNA before its genetic code is translated
What do cells lose once they have matured and specialised?
Their totipotency
What totipotent cells are still found in mature animals?
Adult stem cells
What are stem cells?
Undifferentiated cells
Where are adult stem cells found?
Bone marrow, small intestine and the skin
What other type of stem cells are there besides adult stem cells?
Embryonic stem cells
What are pluripotent cells?
Cells that can become multiple different types of cell
What are unipotent cells?
Cells that have a single function
